with LearningGuide

LearningGuide has provided Royal Boskalis Westminster nv with a LearningGuide performance support and learning system for its new BaaN 5c ERP Webtop application.

Royal Boskalis Westminster nv is a very geographically dispersed, international organization with dredging activities in more than fifty countries on five continents. Boskalis has approximately 3,000 employees comprising several nationalities. It has a vast and multi-purpose fleet of approximately 300 vessels and other supporting equipment.

About the project
Royal Boskalis Westminster nv has developed ERP-Lite, a BaaN 5c ERP application, of which 180 implementations will take place across 50 countries. In previous similar projects providing the user population with traditional classroom training would take many months and involve significant resources from the training department. An on line training system would considerably reduce the time take for user adoption, providing a quicker return on investment, as well as providing a considerable financial saving. Distance learning, with remote, distributed support, was also preferred because some of Boskalis’ sites do not have a network connection, so the training also had to be available both stand-alone and on line format.

The training material had to be entirely incorporated within the BaaN 5c application and, in addition, used as course material to help raise the knowledge of a user group of 300 staff that required training to a higher level. The learning and support solution needed to provide employees with information and insight into company processes and working instructions. Simulated, practical business cases that employees would typically encounter in the ‘ERP-Lite’ application were presented.

The LearningGuide system provides support within Boskalis’ contract fulfillment, logistics, finance, fleet and equipment, personnel, supporting scenarios and business management ERP processes.

Learning and support objects included ‘quick references’ about each process and ERP application feature, ‘deeper references’ providing further instruction and ‘interactive training’ options.

Return on investment
By using LearningGuide to provide support to users’ questions, directly in the workplace, a saving on the BaaN 5c user training was achieved, along with reductions in the workload of the Support Desk.

As well as achieving a faster user adoption, the total return on investment exceeded that normally achieved with traditional training as users could refresh their knowledge right at the time they needed it, and didn’t need to rely on remembering particular parts of classroom courses.
